After the arrest of three Rajasthan Royals players and 11 bookies on charges of spot fixing IPL matches, it has been revealed that Badrish Dutt, Delhi police Special Cell officer who was found dead under mysterious circumstances along with his live-in partner in a Gurgaon flat on 11 May, had also been investigating the IPL spot fixing case.

According to a source in Delhi police Special cell, 'Dutt was the first officer among the Special Cell team who had received a tip-off on the IPL spot fixing. In early April, he was informed that a few bookies in south Delhi were involved in spot-fixing the ongoing IPL matches.' This information was shared by senior police officials who constituted teams to investigate the information.

The source added, 'Dutt was a specialist in putting phones on surveillance. Hence he was assigned the task of tracking the phone calls being made by the suspected bookies.'

During investigations, Dutt had also reportedly come up with many leads in the case.

'Approximately 70 phones were kept on surveillance, out of which 30 were found to be in contact with numbers in Pakistan. The call detail records revealed that people from Dubai and Karachi were also contacted several times,' the source added.

On the day of Dutt's death, he was supposed to conduct a raid in the case, the source added. ‘We are supposed to carry out raids in Delhi and Gurgaon to locate a few bookies who were involved in the spot fixing of IPL matches. Jiju Janardhan, who is a distant relative of Sreesanth, and among the 11 bookies who have been arrested by the police, was in constant touch with bookies in Delhi, Cochin and Dubai.

However, Neeraj Kumar, Delhi police commissioner, denied the involvement of any bookie in Dutt’s death. It is yet to be confirmed whether Dutt’s death was a suicide or murder.
