With an eye on next year’s  assembly polls Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday convened an emergency cabinet metting to fast forward the process of the regularisation of unauthorized colonies. During the  several hours long discussion law related issues and other hurdles were taken up.

According to sources, Dikshit in next couple of days would meet union urban development minister Kamal Nath to discuss unauthorised colonies issue and whether the Delhi High Court should be informed about the regularisation process as in an order in 1993,it had asked the city authorities to do so.

Last month, the city government had asked Nath to allow finalising the boundaries of unauthorised colonies on the basis of the aerial map of 2007 instead of aerial map of 2002 so as to provide relief to a large number of unauthorised colonies.

Delhi government has almost completed necessary ground work to regularise around 917 unauthorised colonies which are home to around 40 lakh people.

After cabinet meeting, Dikshit said government was waiting for certain clarification from the union UD ministry and may even start regularising the colonies from next week.

‘We have decided to seek opinion on the issue. The ground work for regularising around 917 colonies has been completed,’ Dikshit said.

Government officials said that high court had asked the government to inform about regularisation of any colony in the city.

Sources said that now the main confusion which Delhi government has already been sought from the UD ministry on whether the notification for regularisation would be issued by the Delhi government or by the Centre.

The Delhi government had in June finalised boundaries of over 1,018 unauthorised colonies paving the way for their regularisation, a key poll promise of the Congress government which is due to face election in 15 months.

In the evening, reportedly top officials of Delhi government including chief secretary PK Tripathi met senior officials of UD ministry and discussed the issue.
