Dearth of medicines adds insult to injury for Trilokpuri victims

After prohibitory orders were imposed under Section 144 of the CrPC by the Delhi police, all the shops including chemist stores have been forced to shut down until further orders. However, on Monday, police allowed the opening of Safal and Mother Dairy kiosks to facilitate the availability of vegetables, bread and other food items for an hour.

‘Police failed to anticipate the needs of the victims as they did not allow chemists in the area to open their stores. The regular medicines kept in the houses are not sufficient to treat the severe injuries. We need disinfectants, bandages, pain killers, antibiotics and other medicines,’ Sangeeta, a resident of Block 17 told Millennium Post. Her husband and 17-year-old son received critical injuries on their heads and other body parts during the communal violence.

Another woman, who was seen requesting police officials sitting near the barricading ‘Sahab, bahar jaane do, dawai lani hain’ (sir, please allow me to cross the barricades to go and buy medicines), was turned away by the officials. Snapping at her, the officials asked her to go back to her house. None of the residents of the area were allowed to go outside area marked by the Delhi police. Also, the entry of outsiders has been restricted to maintain law and order situation.

About 50 persons have been injured including 13 police personnel in the communal clashes triggered by several rumours. People, whose family members have been detained by the police, have left their houses to stay with relatives.
