Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) College of the Delhi University (DU) has a notice to vacate its present building located in West Delhi’s Karampura area by the end of this month but the new building in Dwarka locality is still under construction. The entire enthusiasm of the faculty and students getting a new campus has been marred with lack of facilities and apathy of the administration.
In a visit to the new destination of DDU College, a Millennium Post team found debris and garbage littered around the campus besides building materials piled up in the campus. The seven-storeyed under-construction building does not have even a single well furnished classroom, laboratory or office.
According to the sources, the land for the new building in the Dwarka area was allotted to the DDUC in 2005 and construction of the college started in 2011. A total budget of Rs 151 crore was allocated for its construction but due to failure of deadline and repeated extensions, the cost jumped up 20 per cent of the total allocated budget.
“After the advent of the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, the project work sped up but there is a lot of work to be done and that might take another six months prior which, shifting in building is not possible,” sources said. “The current situation of the newly-constructed building is such that neither classes nor any activities can be held at the place. Not a single chair or desk has been procured. Even the lights and fans have not been fit in the building but the principal did not contest the notice and is ready to shift the college,” a teacher on the request of anonymity said.
Several students and teachers expressed their concerns over the “dictatorial approach” of the college administration.
