Delhi Development Authority [DDA] is all set to amend the DDA Act to accommodate councillors in its board, which is lying vacant for the last two months. A proposal is likely to be moved in the DDA board meeting scheduled in July.
As per DDA Act - 1957, two councillors were appointed as members in DDA Board, but after trifurcation of MCD, the amendment in DDA Act became imminent. The seats of councillors in governing bodies of Delhi Jal Board [DJB], Delhi Public Library and Delhi University are also lying vacant due to ambiguity created by trifurcation of erstwhile MCD.
‘The matter is likely to be tabled in the board meeting of DDA scheduled in July. Board may pass
the resolution for amendment in DDA Act to include one councillor from each corporation as board member,’ said a senior official of DDA.
As per existing provision, five public representatives - three Members of Legislative Assembly [MLA] and two councillors, are included in the board as members. Presently, three MLAs, Harshvardhan, Subhash Chopra and Naseeb Singh, are in the board of DDA while the term of two councillors Rajesh Gehlot and Sudesh Kumar Bhasin ended in March.
Rajesh Gehlot is presently Chairman of Standing Committee in South Delhi Municipal Corporation [SDMC] while Bhasin could not contest the corporation election.
The inclusion of councillors in the board of DJB, Delhi Public Library [DPL] and University of Delhi also remain ambiguous. DJB and DPL are supposed to have two councillors each as their board members while the governing body of University of Delhi should include a councillor.
‘We have written to Lt Governor to direct these bodies to amend their Acts to include councillors as board members and are planning to come with resolution soon,’ said Rajesh Gehlot, Chairman of Standing Committee in SDMC.
The same is voiced by Mehak Singh and Yogender Chandolia Chairmen of Standing Committees in East and North Municipal Corporations.
