DDA set to handover parks for better upkeep

“As per this new policy, parks of three acres and above area will be allowed for adoption through an agreement between DDA and interest private partners,” said Balvinder Kumar, vice chairman of DDA. Initially, the parks would be handed over for five years which could be extended in installments of three years subject to good maintenance and upkeep of area and satisfaction of the monitoring committee.

The policy was approved during a board meeting of DDA on Friday.

As per the new policy, the private partner would be allowed to conduct certain eco-friendly activities to sustain financially. The permissible activities include eco-friendly kiosks for selling packed healthy and nutritious food items, books, magazines; florist shops, plant nursery, park furniture etc. “They will also have the right lease the kiosks, to put up hoardings on the boundary, right of advertising on toilet complexes in the park,” added Kumar.

The private agency will be responsible for upkeep of civil, electrical, horticultural and public utility.

“The agreement can be terminated by giving a month notice on complaint of public especially walkers’ association,” he added. DDA has also made annual review of the upkeep of the allotted parks mandatory by independent experts to assess development activities. Initially, the number of parks for adoption will be limited to 25 to 30 and depending upon the success of the scheme many more parks will be included in this scheme.
