DDA received Rs 24 lakh for Noor mosque

Update: 2012-05-03 23:45 GMT
In what can be called a major relief to the Muslim community in Delhi, Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has decided to hand over the disputed land at Jangpura to Noor mosque.

Earlier, DDA had claimed that the mosque was built on an encroached area of a DDA plot and had, in early 2011, razed the mosque terming it as 'illegal'.

According to official sources from Delhi government, DDA on Thursday received Rs 23.75 lakh for the land from Delhi Wakf Board (DWB).

Talking to Millennium Post, Azim Ul Haq, CEO, DWB, said, 'We have transferred the money to DDA and soon the land would be given to us. After finalising the layout of the mosque and getting the approval from DDA, Noor mosque would come up again.'

According to sources, an Islamic centre would also come up beside the mosque, where Islamic teachings and religious activities would take place.

Earlier, several meetings took place between Maulana's, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and DWB. DDA had initially demanded close to Rs 1 crore.

On conditions of anonymity, a Muslim resident, who was offering Namaaz at the site said, 'Our people have been praying at this site for the last 35 years and even after it was demolished, we continued to do so.'

The demolition did not sit well with the Muslim community and a riot almost ensued. A huge mob that had gathered near the mosque had pelted stones and had started damaging vehicles. The Shahi Imam of the Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmad Bukhari, also took the matter further by leading the protestors to the police station.

According to 2011 census, Muslims constitute 11 per cent of the population in Delhi. The land and the religious structure was earlier inspected by the Religious Committee of the Delhi government, which had concluded that the mosque had indeed come up illegally.

Jubilant after hearing the news, Maulana Zafar Janakpuri said, 'It is good that finally a religion is getting boost by DDA and DWB. We are happy to hear the news.'
