DCI moots bridge course in MBBS for BDS grads

In a move taken to address the widening gap of doctor-patient relation in the country, the Dental Council of India (DCI) has mooted an idea to introduce a bridge course in MBBS for BDS graduates. The move also aims at solving the issue of doctor’s crunch in rural areas. 

In another development, the Health Ministry has approved a revised code of ethics of DCI, empowering registered dental practitioners to issue death certificates if a patient dies during treatment.

However, the Health Ministry proposal to train nurses and allowing them to prescribe allopathic medicines has been opposed by both Indian Medical Council and MCI.

“There was a shortage of medical professionals in rural areas. A good number of BDS graduates pass every year. These graduates had already been trained in many aspects of treatment during their four-year plus one-year (internship) course. With a further two or three-year MBBS course these graduates can meet the requirement of medical professionals in rural areas,” said Mazumdar, who has been unanimously re-elected as DCI president for the second time.
