Life in Srinagar was disrupted on Thursday after authorities imposed curfew in nine police stations following sectarian clashes in old parts of the city. However, life in uptown localities of the city remained normal. Curfew was imposed in the city parts on Wednesday evening when groups of people belonging to Shia and Sunni sects clashed at Hawal, Zadibal and its surroundings in the old city.
Police spokesperson said the police had taken cognizance of the skirmishes between two communities. The rioters had also resorted to pelting stones on police who intervened to bring the situation under control.
‘Curfew has been imposed in Nowhatta, M R Gunj, Safakadal, Khanyar, Rainwari, Nigeen, Lal Bazaar, Zadibal and Parimpora police station areas’, said a communiqué from the District Magistrate.
Police assisted by contingents of CRPF were seen in battle gear in curfewed areas and residents were not allowed to come out of their houses. Traffic intersections and main roads have been barricaded by coils of concertina wire.
Educational institutions, banks, post offices, businesses and other routine activities were also affected. Kashmir University, which falls under Nigeen Police, had to postpone the examination due to curfew.
An official spokesman said that the situation was under control and no untoward incident was reported on Thursday from any part of the city.
