Leading Kathak dancer Pandit Birju Maharaj was on Wednesday awarded an honorary DLitt by the University of Calcutta.
Maharaj was awarded DLitt (honoris causa) at the convocation for his contribution to classic dance. Bengali poet Joy Goswami was also given a DLitt along with him.
Eminent physicist and fellow of Royal Society T V Ramakrishnan and London-based physician Dr Khalid Hameed were honoured with DSc (honoris causa). Ramakrishnan, however, was not present in person to collect the honour due to the Chennai floods.
