A murder accused from Haryana’s Sonepat district fled from police custody after he was brought to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital for routine treatment on Saturday morning.

The accused, identified as Karamveer (28), reportedly locked the doctor and head constable, who was guarding him at the OPD, inside a room and walked out of the hospital smoothly with his brother, who had come to meet him. Karamveer, who went absconding after allegedly committing a murder at Sonepat, had an award of Rs 1 lakh on his arrest. Once arrested, he was first lodged at Sonepat Jail. But after around five months, he was shifted to Neemka Jail, for his alleged involvement in gang wars inside the jail premises, said a police official.

Karamveer had a medical condition for which he needed routine treatment. On Saturday, the police had brought him to Safdarjung Hospital for the third time in the past five months. He was accompanied by two other inmates, who had also come for treatment, and his brother had also come to meet him at the hospital.

Karamveer’s brother was waiting outside when he was escorted inside the OPD by Haryana Police head constable Kanhaiya Lal. While the head constable was trying to help doctor with some formalities, Karamveer locked both inside the room and fled with his brother.
