11 CHILD LABOURERS RESCUED, FOUR HELD

Eleven child labourers employed at garment manufacturing units in west Delhi have been rescued and four employers arrested on Tuesday in a joint operation by police, Labour department and activists of Bachpan Bachchao Aandolan (BBA).

‘The children, aged between 12 and 14, trafficked from villages of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, were involved in stitching and embroidery work and had to work for more than 12 hours a day. For this, they were getting a meagre amount of Rs 50 -100 a week,’ BBA.

While four employers were arrested, one managed to escape during the rescue operation which was led by P V Tyagi, Tehsildar of Dabri police station, accompanied by police, members of Labour Department and activists of BBA.

The rescued children were trafficked to Delhi by local agents from villages in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, the NGO said.

‘I was brought here by a relative who gave me away to this employer. I work from 9 am till noon and used to get Rs 50 in a week,’ said 12-year-old Bansi (name changed to protect identity).

According to BBA Chairperson R S Chaurasia, a large number of children were being trafficked from UP and Bihar to other states for work.

‘The way these children were being hired for hazardous occupations, it goes to show that the employers were not afraid of Child Labour or Bonded Labour Act,’ Chaurasia said.

‘Labour Department is mainly responsible for this as they are not implementing the directions of the High Court in releasing arrear wages to the children and Rs 20,000 as compensation from the employers,’ he alleged.

YOUTH GETS LIFE TERM FOR KILLING MONEYLENDER

A 27-year-old youth has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Delhi court for killing a moneylender to avoid paying back a loan of Rs 15,000 that he had taken from him.

Additional Sessions Judge Sanjay Garg convicted Rajeev Kumar on the basis of the circumstantial evidence that victim Arun Kumar, a professional money lender was last seen with him on 9 September, 2010.

As per the prosecution’s case, Arun Kumar used to lend money on interest and Kumar had taken a loan from him and committed his murder to avoid paying it back.

The victim's body was recovered from Maharana Pratap Park in East Delhi on 9 September, 2010.

The accused had denied the entire evidence against him and falsely stated that he has no connection with the deceased in any manner.

‘No money was ever taken by him from the deceased at any point of time. He and his family were not on visiting terms with the deceased's family and there was no enmity between them,’ the counsel for Kumar had contended.

Brushing aside Kumar's counsel submission, the court said the evidence of witnesses and other evidences prove his guilt.
