The accused has been identified as Yashpal Singh Tomar (50), a resident of Shahdara. He was running an NGO namely “Global Need Foundation (G-Need)”. The fax machine and laptop used for commission of the crime and other incriminating documents has been recovered from his possession.
“Recently, a complaint was received by crime branch from NTPC Limited stating therein that their office has received a letter through fax from one NGO requesting for Corporate Sponsorship of Rs 1,50,000 for an award ceremony.
The fax number on the letter was of the PMO and it bore endorsement from the same for the sponsorship. On suspicion, the complainant got it verified from the PMO and found that the letter was fake,” said Ravindra Yadav, joint commissioner of police (crime branch). A team was formed and the accused was arrested. During investigations, it was revealed that similar letters through fax had been received by ONGC in Mumbai and Oil India Limited in Noida. On intensive interrogation, he disclosed that he is an MBA and the NGO was formed by him way back in 2000.
As he was facing shortage of funds, he planned to send some of the letters having fake endorsements by the PMO. He was also aware that settings could be changed in a fax machine from which sender’s address and name may be manipulated. The fax machine and laptop used for the crime has been recovered. Further investigation is underway.
