‘Credible threat of militant strike in Jammu region’

The Jammu region is facing a “credible threat” of an attack by terrorists, who could cross over from Pakistan. The information has put security forces on high alert, a senior police official said on Thursday.

“There has been credible threat that International Border can be breached (by militants) from Akhnoor to Kathua area (to carry out attack),” said Deputy Inspector General of Police (Jammu-Kathua Range) Ashkoor Wani.

He refused to divulge the ‘specific inputs’. However, he added that the police, over the past one month, have been maintaining ‘high alert’ in the Jammu region. The police have received inputs that militants might have breached the IB in Jammu region three times, the officer said. Jammu is one of three regions of the state, the other being Kashmir and Ladakh.

“There are credible inputs that if such breach takes place along the International Border, they (militants) might try to launch attacks at the places along the Jammu-Pathankot National Highway,” Wani said.

He added that security forces – Border Security Force (BSF), Army and police – are maintaining a strict vigil to foil such attacks.

“See we keep on learning from what happened in the past. Learning is an ongoing process. But I must tell you that the BSF, Army and then the Police are maintaining a strict vigil, we are maintaining extra vigil along the known and other vulnerable infiltration routes,” he said.
