On the penultimate day of adjournment of Rajya Sabha this session, on the gangrape incident in the city, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde vowed in the Rajya Sabha a crackdown on buses with tinted glasses. Announcing a slew of measures, he said police would also verify the antecedents of all drivers, staff of all public vehicles and autorickshaws in the city.
In the Upper House, a bill seeking to expand the definition of terrorist act to include offences that threaten the country’s economic security was also introduced.
Moving the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Bill, Shinde said, ‘The proposed amendments are carried to bring more clarity to the existing legal regime and remove deficiencies identified in its implementation by central and state intelligence and investigating agencies.’
Rajya Sabha will function from Thursday to pass important pending legislation like the Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill. The house was to adjourn sine die on Wednesday but has been extended by another day in view of the pending Bills. The Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill, which was passed by the Lok Sabha on Tuesday after some initial hiccups, will come up for consideration and passage in Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
