Cops pin hopes on Ankita Singh

Investigators working on Geetika Sharma suicide case are now pinning their hopes on Ankita Singh, who is likely to join the investigation on Sunday. Ankita’s name had been mentioned in Geetika’s suicide note, in which she had alleged that Ankita had an illicit relationship with Kanda and also had a daughter with him.

On Thursday, Delhi police said that Ankita has been traced in Singapore. Sources have said she has been living there since 27 July.

Police has high hopes of Ankita providing valuable information in the case, since it has been said that she was close to both Kanda and Geetika. Ankita’s sister Shweta Singh told media, ‘Ankita was unaware of Geetika’s suicide but when I informed her, she was stunned. She had thought that Geetika was too mature to have taken such a step.’ She admitted that her sister had had a fight with Geetika in Goa in 2009. When asked about Ankita’s relationship with Kanda, Shweta said, ‘Ankita would be better able to talk about it.’

Deleted data from Kanda’s computer has also been recovered by experts. This data is also expected to help investigation. ‘Raids are on in various parts of the country to gather more evidence in the case. Many MDLR employees are also being questioned,’ a police official said. ‘Geetika had tried to commit suicide several times earlier as well, allegedly due to false promises made by Kanda,’ a police source said. Meanwhile, the former Haryana minister, who has been in police custody since 18 August, has complained of feeling unwell for the last two days.

According to a source in police, ‘Kanda is feeling uncomfortable in the police lock-up.’

Police had allegedly refused to provide the medicines that Kanda asked for on the first night after his arrest. Later, after Kanda’s lawyer took permission from the court, he was given the medicines.

A source said a table fan has been installed inside the jail as per Kanda’s demand. He was also allowed to change his clothes each time he was taken to the MDLR office or farmhouse in Gurgaon or his Civil Lines residence. An air-conditioned car would also be arranged for his commute from Delhi to Gurgaon.

On Friday, students union of Indian National Lok Dal organised a two-hour protest at Jantar Mantar against such facilities being provided to Kanda.

Meanwhile, Delhi police is likely to seek extension of custody of Kanda. Investigators claimed they have collected evidence that establishes harassment of Geetika Sharma by Kanda. The police custody of Kanda, who surrendered last Saturday, ends tomorrow. Delhi Police also claimed to have ‘enough evidence’ against Kanda and his employee Aruna Chaddha to implicate them for abetment in the suicide of Geetika, police sources said.

Kanda will appear in court on Saturday.

‘Nupur Mehta has also been sent a notice asking her to appear before Delhi police. But she has not responded till now. Ankita, who has been traced in Singapore, is likely to come to Delhi by 26 August. She will also be called for questioning,’ the official said.

Ankita, a dancer by profession, was spotted by Kanda during one of her performances at his Gurgaon farmhouse. Kanda was intimate with her since then.
