On Tuesday, two people were arrested for stealing steel blades belonging to Jindal Steel group. The steel blades were meant for export and were worth Rs 70 lakh.

Balwinder Singh, 45, and Manoj, 28, were arrested on Monday from Delhi’s Wazirabad on charges of stealing and misappropriating approximately 19 tonnes of steel blades which were to be exported to Egypt, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (crime) S B S Tyagi.

All the stolen steel blades have been recovered, said the officer. A Gurgaon based export company, Gateway Rail Freight, were in contract with Jindal Steel to carry their goods from Hisar in Haryana through their transport. ‘On 4 November, the steel blades were misappropriated by the container driver, Mangal Singh, with the help of Balvinder Singh,’ said Tyagi.

‘The accused filled the container with the plastic bags containing salt to neutralise the weight of the container. The container, filled with salt, was delivered at the export company’s Gurgaon depot. The same container was exported to Egypt where it was found containing salt,’ Tyagi added.

On interrogation Balwinder disclosed that he had stolen these steel blades from the container with the help of Mangal Singh and Rurdu Singh, a helper, from Hisar.

‘Balwinder had sold the entire stolen goods to Manoj. He had received a part amount of Rs 2.5 lakh. The remaining Rs 2.5 lakh was to be paid after the sale of steel blades,’ said the officer.

Efforts are being made to apprehend other accused.
