The special investigation team (SIT) of the Delhi Police Crime Branch, led by assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Sikander Singh, have arrested a criminal involved in the cloning and misuse of debit and credit cards near Rohini-West Metro station on Thursday.
The arrested has been identified as Vipin Tomar, alias Pinto, who hails from UP and is pursuing his LLB from the Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut. A static card reader, mobile card reader (used for stealing data from original cards), five printed credit/debit cards, four plain cards and two small CDs with software have been recovered from his possession.
During interrogation it was discovered that Pinto has the expertise to clone any debit/credit card.
Pinto would start with looking for people with criminal tendencies, who were employed in shops or petrol pumps. Once they had been identified, he would give the mobile card reader to the shop or petrol pump employee. The hired individuals would hide the small device in their pocket. Whenever a customer would hand over his debit/credit card, the hired individual would secretly swipe the card in the mobile phone reader kept in his pocket.
In this way, the data of the debit/credit card would be stolen and preserved in the mobile card reader. With the use of a blank card with magnetic strip, he would upload all the information using a special MSR software onto the card.
These cloned cards were then used for the purchase of costly goods. The card holder would only realise he’s been cheated once the amount was debited to his account. The victim of the cloning and the concerned banks would settle the issue of the amount stolen, till the cloning was detected by an investigative agency.
In 2009, Pinto into contact with a man named Anand Mishra, allegedly a master in cloning debit/credit cards. Pinto learnt the tricks of the trade from Mishra, and eventually he formed his own gang involving two persons, namely, Kamal and Rajesh, who were on the lookout for quick money. However, in 2011, his associates where arrested and Pinto fled and resurfaced two years later.
