As the 64th Republic Day approaches, the Delhi police has left no stone unturned when it comes to securing the city.
For the first time in the history of Republic Day celebration, the Delhi police have deployed more than 50 companies of Central Paramilitary Forces (CPMF), along with 200 companies of Delhi Police.
‘Generally, every year the security is beefed up four to five days ahead of the celebration. But this time the security has been arranged 20 days prior to the celebration,’ said a police official.
‘We have deployed 50 CPMF companies which will have a strength of 75 officials, covering all the important places of the city,’ said Deepak Mishra, Special Commissioner, Law and Order.
‘Companies like, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Border Security Force (BSF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been deployed to keep the security in check,’ said a police official.
According to the police, there are personnels who have been deployed at a range of five kilometres, and also a slew of measures like intensive checking are being taken to enhance the security. ‘Places like Connaught Place, Mandi House, India Gate, Rashtrapati Bhawan, the Embassies, IGI Airport, New Delhi railway station, and Hazrat Nizzamuddin station are under constant vigilance,’ said an official. Over hundreds of barricades have been placed near monuments keeping in mind the terror threat. ‘Hundreds of women constables as well as home guards have been deployed at several important junctions,’ informed an official.
Apart from increasing the police presence, intensive checking at vulnerable points, tenant verification, guest house checking and sensitisation of cyber cafe owners, second-hand car dealers, transporters, property dealers, cycle sellers, chemical dealers and phone booth owners are being done prior to the celebration.
Bordering state police officers were requested to take necessary steps stop traffic from entering Delhi before 10 pm till the Republic Day. ‘All the police stations have been put on maximum alert and patrolling has been intensified. The station house officers have been asked to keep a close eye on anti-social elements,’ said a senior police official.
