The daylight robbery of Rs 1.5 crore and the murder of a security guard by two armed robbers in Kamla Nagar have once again raised questions on policing in the city.
It is believed shortages of beat constables is the major reason behind such bank or ATM heist in the national Capital. However the cops are rather blaming banks and private security agencies for carrying the cash without following set norms.
According to Delhi police, there should be at least two beat constables deployed in a locality. However, if the locality falls under the sensitive zone, minimum police deployment goes up to five. “If all the beat constables do constant patrolling in their given areas, the crime rate would definitely be curbed,” said Ramveer, a Garment shop owner in Kamla Nagar.
A police officer, requesting anonymity claimed that the staff crunch has always plagued Delhi Police. He further added that every police station in the Capital face severe staff shortage. “Out of the available staff, on an average 20 per cent of them remain on leave. As a result, the patrolling in the city gets affected”, he added.
Surprisingly, the police has not issued any guidelines regarding security near the ATM kiosks. “It is not mandatory to deploy a cop near ATM kiosk. It is not even possible”, clarified another police officer.
