Delhi Police arrested a Junior Engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD) after an eight-year-old boy died due to falling in a drain maintained by them in North-west’s Rani Bagh area. According to the police, the arrested accused has been identified as Narender.

In May, a class III student, Anas died after he fell into a drain. The incident took place at around 9 pm when Anas was walking back home after playing at a local park in Srinagar Garden area with his cousin Mohsin (18) when he did not notice a broken culvert and fell into the drain beneath it. His cousin Mohsin jumped into the drain to save him but failed. Mohsin came out of the drain and ran towards the locality, raising an alarm.

The police were informed and later Anas’s body was fished out of the drain.  He was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead, a senior police official said. “During investigation it was found that the responsibility of maintenance of the Nullah in which the victim boy fell and lost his life was upon the Public Works Department, Delhi government. A part of the nullah/drain where the incident occurred was uncovered. The PWD had neither put the required slab nor displayed any warning sign for the general public in this regard. Hence, negligence was found on the part of concerned officials of PWD,” said a senior police official. A case under relevant sections of the IPC has been registered against the accused at the Rani Bagh police station.
