A person has been arrested on Monday in connection with the acid attack, which left a girl and her minor friend injured in the Begampur area of outer Delhi. The accused threw acid after his marriage proposal was rejected by the victim.
Delhi police managed to arrest the accused, who had taken shelter at his relative’s house nearby.
According to the police, the condition of both victims has remained stable at Ambedkar hospital. The girl had sustained 50 percent burns, while her juvenile friend (Girl) admitted with around 20 percent burns.
According to police, the accused was identified as 23-year-old, Manoj, a native of Bihar, who lives along with his family in Begampur area of outer Delhi. He is also a neighbour of the victims.
Police said that during interrogation, Manoj claimed that he and the girl were in a relationship for some time. ‘Around one month ago, he had taken the girl to his native place in Bihar with her consent, where they had spent some time with each other and later, they returned back to the capital last week,’ said the police.
In the meantime, the girl’s father registered a case of kidnapping against Manoj with Begampur police station, alleging her daughter was abducted by the accused.
After Manoj and the girl returned to Delhi, the couple was produced before the local police. However, the kidnapping case was later quashed with the girl’s statement, asserting she had gone to Bihar along with Manoj, on her own consent and without being pressurised or instigated by anyone.
Manoj told the police that following the case, the girl started ignoring him. He tried to meet her, in order to settle any difference. However, at every instant, she refused to meet him. ‘After my failed attempts to pacify her, I vowed to take revenge and hurled acid at her,’ said Manoj in his statement to the police.
On Sunday night, at around 8 pm, when the girl was going to the market, accompanied by her juvenile friend, Manoj strategically waited for their arrival. After they arrived near Indraprastha School, he hurled acid at them and fled.
Police were informed by onlookers, after which they were taken to the nearby Ambedkar hospital. Initially, Manoj’s father was called in by the police for questioning. After gathering certain clues, the cops nabbed Manoj from a relative’s house. Further investigations are on.
