A Delhi police constable was stabbed to death while another was injured when they intervened in a scuffle between two groups of youth in Delhi’s red light area, GB Road, on late Tuesday night. Police has arrested four attackers, including a juvenile, after the incident.
The incident was reported near brothel number 57 in GB road. Reportedly, a youth ran out of the brothel, screaming for help. The three beat officers, Head Constable Baljeet, constable Bijender and constable Sandeep, who were deputed at the police picket near HDFC bank ATM for night duty, saw him and went to his aid.
The youth, who was later identified as Irshad, 22, told them that four persons attacked him in the brothel and are coming back to kill him. Soon afterwards, the attackers reached there. The cops tried to save Irshad from an attacker who was holding an electric button knife in his hand.
Two accused, meanwhile, manged to flee after seeing the cops. The juvenile then apparently shouted, ‘Stab them or we will be caught.’ The knife borne assailant, who was later identified as Suraj, 22, slashed Constable Sandeep’s face, who started bleeding profusely.
After this, Suraj stabbed Bijender, who was holding the juvenile, in his abdomen. Meanwhile, more policemen reached the spot and apprehended the accused.
Injured Bijender, Sandeep and Irshad were taken to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan hospital in an auto rickshaw, were Bijender was declared dead on arrival while Sandeep and Irshad are undergoing treatment.
‘Two other accused, Ashish and Manoj, were arrested later from their houses in Pushp Vihar and Karawal Nagar respectively,’ said a police officer.
Suraj, a resident of Madangiri, works as a part-time car driver and the juvenile works in a mobile shop. Ashish works as a ticketing agent in a tour and travel company in Connaught Place while Manoj works in a factory in Karawal Nagar, the official said.
According to additional commissioner of police Devesh Chandra Srivastava, the reason behind the scuffle is yet to be ascertained.
‘We have arrested all four accused and interrogation is on,’ said Srivastava.
Police has also questioned Irshad, who was reportedly accompanied by some of his friends to the area. He, however, denied that there was anyone else with him.
The deceased constable, Vijender, hailed from Sonepat district in Haryana was staying in the barracks of the Kamla Market police station. He joined Delhi police in 2009 as a constable. ‘We will demand for a gallantry medal for Bijender,’ said Srivastava.
