The four convicted in the 16 December Delhi gang rape returned to jail and donned white kurta-pyjamas, a uniform that indicates that they were no longer undertrials.
According to Tihar Jail conventions, those who have been sentenced in a case get the formal prisoners' dress and shifted to sections in the prison meant for convicts. Convicts Pawan Gupta, 19, and Vinay Sharma, 20, were lodged in jail number 7, while Mukesh, 26, and Akshay Thakur, 28, were sent to jail number 4.
‘They have been lodged in the same cells in which they had been staying earlier. Their cells may be changed if required later,’ a Tihar official said. After getting the official white dress, the convicts will undergo a medical checkup, he said. Depending upon the medical report, suitable work will be allotted to them during imprisonment, he said.
The four men, who were convicted on Tuesday in the brutal gang rape of a 23-year-old physiotherapy intern on 16 December, received the death sentence on Friday. The trial court's decision will now be sent to the Delhi High Court for endorsement, the official said.
