Convict dodges Delhi cops, escapes in Audi

A convict, who was being taken back to the Tihar jail after a court hearing, managed to dodge his escorts and escaped in an Audi car. The incident took place at Hari Nagar in west Delhi on Thursday afternoon.

In what seems to be a pre-planned move, the Audi car arrived at a dhabha, where the auto-rickshaw in which he was being taken by a police escort, had stopped to let the prisoner and the guard have a meal. The accused, identified as Gaurav Sethi, managed to give his escort a slip and escaped in the car.

Sethi, a resident of Pitampura in north-west Delhi, is an under trial prisoner in a case of cheating registered at the Lodhi Colony police station in south Delhi, said sources. The accused was taken to the Saket court for hearing and from there he was ordered to be taken to the Tihar jail.

On his way to the prison, the convict and the policeman accompanying him stopped for food at a dhaba in Hari Nagar. ‘Soon, on the pretext of washing his hands after food, he ran outside the dhaba and boarded an Audi car, which had come to take him away,’ said sources.

Gaurav is facing charges under section 420 (cheating) and other related sections of IPC. Police is now monitoring the CCTV footage made available from a nearby area, said sources. A case under section 224 of IPC has been registered at the Hari Nagar police station.
