On late Wednesday evening, two girls were killed when a container truck crushed them while they were riding their scooter in Yojana Vihar area.
The deceased have been identified as Payal Srivastava, 28, and Dushyant Thakur, 25. The scooter that they were riding on was a birthday gift presented by Payal's father to her on Wednesday only.
Payal then planned a visit to the nearby temple along with her friend Dushyant. They both were residents of Karawal Nagar in east Delhi.
According to police, when they both were returning, a speeding container truck jumped the red light, crushed both of them and dragged them for a few meters.
‘The incident was reported to the police and the duo was rushed to a nearby hospital, where both of them were declared dead on arrival. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination and the reports are still awaited,’ the official added.
Payal and Dushyant were working with an automobile company in Patpatganj industrial area. Payal was the sales manager while Dushyant was an accountant in the same company. During the incident, Payal was driving the scooter and Dushyant was sitting on the back seat.
The eye-witnesses nabbed the driver and the cleaner. The cops reached the crime scene immediately and apprehended both of them. During the test for alcohol, they both were found to be drunk.
A case of drunken and negligent driving causing death has been registered against the duo.
‘The truck has been taken into police custody and the driver has been identified as Narender Yadav, hailing from Sultanpuri, Uttar Pradesh,’ said the official.
According to Suresh Chand Srivastav, father of Payal, ‘Payal had been demanding the scooter for so long. She wanted to go to her office comfortably. So finally I thought of gifting her the scooter on her birthday. I bought the scooter from Kanti Nagar and when I presented her, she wanted to take it to Sai Baba Mandir in Vivek Vihar. As she didn't know how to ride a scooter properly, she called her friend Dushyant to come along with her. But after an hour, I received an information that they both have died in an accident.’
