“Constant use of social media might lead to addiction, which is detrimental to work, lack of privacy, vulnerability to crimes, prone to be victims, cyber bullying and online harassment,” D Murugesan said while delivering the convocation address at VIT University’s Chennai campus on Saturday.
“I am prompted to make a reference on statistics on cyber crime rates in India. In 2011 there were 13,301 instances of cyber crime reported in India, it was 22,060, 717,780 in 2013, 1,49,254 in 2014 and 3 lakhs in 2015. India is ranked third highest in online cyber bullying. These things must be kept in mind when you are at internet,” he said.
He said that most of the ills that the society faced today were because of the easy course we had taken and drifting away from following proper value system and consequent loss of character.
“Let me assure you that the practice of proper value system and the path of righteousness will always brighten the intellect because without practice of virtue, human reason is not capable of growth,” Justice Murugesan said.
VIT University chancellor Dr G Viswanathan said that five lakh schools in India had less students.
“Teacher absenteeism is one of the important issues in school education. India faced a shortage of five lakh teachers in school education sector. Union government should follow the model of South Korea and Finland in school education system,” he said.
