Constables arrested for setting man on fire

Update: 2013-11-15 22:57 GMT
The two constables, who were accused of setting a 48-year-old man ablaze in Neb Sarai, were arrested on Thursday evening. Soon after the death of the 48-year-old man, the case was transferred to Delhi police’s crime branch. The constables were accused of burning Uday Chand for reportedly not fulfilling the extortion amount. They’ve been booked for attempted murder and extortion, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Following allegations of bias against the district police, the case was transferred to the crime branch on Wednesday evening. A core team was made to collect evidence against Raj Kumar and Surender Kumar, constables posted at Neb Sarai police station. They have been arrested on  basis of the statement given by the deceased to the Sub District Magistrate, while he was admitted to Safdarjung hospital.

Police officials in the crime branch have said, ‘So far no concrete evidence has been gathered to book the cops under the charge of murder. The investigation is on without being biased to any party. In the evening, the suspended cops were arrested and are being quizzed intensively.'

On late Saturday evening (9 November), the cops allegedly held Naveen, the son of Uday Chand, hostage for not paying a bribe worth Rs 20,000. Chand went to Sainik Farms, where his son was being held, to rescue him from the cops. Over there they got involved in a heated argument. Allegedly, after the argument, the cops took him behind the parked trucks and burnt him. Chand succumbed to 85 per cent burns on Wednesday.

Till Wednesday evening, south Delhi police, who were investigating the case, had failed to arrest the constables and only booked them under charges of attempt to murder and extortion. After the death of Chand, the family and relatives carried out protests outside the hospital and demanded a fair investigation.
