If everything goes according to the plan, Delhiities can have their heart back as the renovation work of Connaught Place is likely to be completed by 31 December this year.

At a high level meeting on Thursday among chief minister Sheila Dikshit, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) chairperson, the traders of Connaught Place and senior officials of Engineers India Limited (EIL),the contractor chosen for the task, discussed the matter and declared that by 31 December they will handover Connaught Place.

Expressing displeasure over the slow progress of the ongoing redevelopment work at Connaught Place, Dikshit at the meeting pulled up EIL officials.

Dikshit issued the direction to the contractor, when a delegation of New Delhi Traders Association called on chief minister requesting her to ensure early completion of the work.

The renovation project was supposed to be completed before the Commonwealth Games in October 2010.

Sources said that the contractor has clearly told government that except tunnels and subways work, rest of the work will be finished.

In the second phase of redevelopment, eight new subways in the Outer Circle and a tunnel in the Middle Circle are being constructed.

The chief minister directed NDMC to review the progress regularly as delay in the project is causing losses to traders and inconvenience to public. The contractor has already missed several deadlines.

In September last year too, Dikshit had issued a similar directive asking the contractor to prepare a chart listing the progress of work on a monthly basis.

Representatives of New Delhi Traders Association had been requesting Dikshit to ensure early completion of work as they were incurring losses due to the ongoing construction activities.
