A major controversy has sparked off in the city Congress, with Rajya Sabha MP Pervez Hashmi filing an application to seek permission to contest from the Okhla assembly seat.

According to his family sources, Hashmi, an arch rival of Asif Mohammad Khan, the sitting Rashtriya Janata Dal MLA from Okhla, has recently joined the Congress party and managed six foundation stone ceremonies, which were laid by chief minister Sheila Dikshit and East Delhi MP Sandeep Dikshit. Hashmi has also submitted the form at Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC), said a source, adding that the RAjya Sabha MP had chaired a public meeting at the NFC Club on Monday evening.

‘Voters in Okhla constituency are not happy with the sitting MLA Asif Mohammad Khan. With the news of Hashmi planning to contest in the upcoming assembly polls, the voters are delighted,’ said senior Congress party worker Jawed Alam. When asked about the issue, the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Jai Prakash Aggarwal said, ‘I have no idea about Hashmi’s application to contest from Okhla constituency. I have not gone through the application forms yet.’  Sources reveal that Hashmi thinks the Okhla Assembly constituency could prove to be a victory citadel for him. Although he has been ousted from this constituency now, previously, Hashmi had secured wins four times from this seat.
