The Congress on Monday demanded the resignation of home minister Rajnath Singh and Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung over communal violence in Trilokpuri in East Delhi and alleged there was a systematic pattern and attempt to polarise ahead of possible assembly polls in Delhi.
The party wanted an independent and impartial inquiry by a third party including by a retired judicial officer.
‘Congress party demands the resignation of the Union home minister and the LG for their inaction and soft attitude towards a serious situation in which the authorities had prior information,’ party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters. Giving a chronology of the incidents, he alleged Delhi Police followed its political masters and acted like mute spectators.
‘Tension between the two communities was brewing for the last one month and intelligence agencies had alerted the home ministry accordingly. Despite concrete intelligence, the callousness of the
Home Ministry led to the situation going out of hand, leading to clashes,’ he said.
Meanwhile, a high-level delegation of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, under the leadership of its president Arvinder Singh Lovely on Monday met the Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi, demanding restoration of communal amity at Trilokpuri after the recent clashes, ensure safety and security of the residents and registration of FIR and arrest of those responsible for stoking the clashes.
Senior Congress leader Haroon Yusuf and chief spokesperson and senior leader Mukesh Sharma were also present. The delegation spent around half an hour with the Police Commissioner, and discussed the situation at Trilokpuri. Keeping the forthcoming Muharram festival in mind, the delegation said police should deploy extra forces at sensitive areas to prevent such clashes. They appealed to the residents of Trilokpuri not to come under the influence of any political party trying to fuel clashes.
