Congress clueless over revamping its city unit; cold war among various lobbies
Delhi Congress has not learnt a lesson from the loss it has suffered in the assembly and parliamentary polls. Even after the forgettable performance in the recent polls, the party has failed to set up a new team for its Delhi unit, mainly due to internal lobbying.
Many selected representatives of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee were removed after the debacle in parliamentary polls. The high command has also ignored its Delhi unit and has hardly thought of revamping it after the polls.
The city Congress has fourteen districts and 140 block level committees which were dissolved in May this year. The party high command had proposed to double the posts for district and block level members. Crucial posts such as chief of minority cell and others are still lying vacant. ‘Many leaders have put posters and many are circulating false information in certain media lobbies to get an important post in the party organisation.
The party high command shall make it clear that this time the selection of candidates must be done without any lobbying or infighting,’ said a senior Congress leader who is dissatisfied with such practices followed by some politicians. ‘This is the time when party needs people who are eligible for the posts and not those who are licking boots of senior party leaders,’ he added. So far, the party has only constituted a new transport cell with former parliamentarian Mahabal Mishra as its chief to garner support from over 2.5 lakh e-rickshaw drivers in the city.
There seems to be an internal ‘cold war’ between the lobbies of former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dixit and former Delhi unit chief JP Aggarwal. Interestingly, ‘Sheila lobby’ still holds power and its members were accused of working independently during the assembly and the parliamentary elections.
Meanwhile, on the other hand, the Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party is likely to form new team of office bearers by the 20 August. The formation of the new team will assume greater significance in wake of the possible re-elections in Delhi assembly, which is currently under suspended animation.
