Cong seeks SC intervention on BJP poaching MLAs

With a video showing a BJP leader allegedly trying to poach an AAP legislator, the Congress on Monday urged the Supreme Court to take cognizance of the matter and order fresh polls in Delhi.
‘The matter is with the Supreme Court and it has asked the (central) government to submit a reply whether it is going for fresh election or asking any party to form a government in Delhi,’ Congress leader Ajay Maken told the media.

Following the sting operation, the city Congress has issued mandatory advisory to all Congress legislators to avoid any kind of conversation with anybody.  A couple of months ago, two Congress MLAs — Asif Mohammad Khan from Okhla assembly and Jai Kishan from Mangolpuri were caught in hidden cameras openly abusing AAP founder and former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Sources said the party MLAs received an unofficial advisory from the Delhi office to guard against people who may record their private conversations.

‘The party has clearly told its MLAs that it will not tolerate any situation that puts the party’s image at stake. The MLAs have to follow the resolution passed by the party a couple of months ago to not support any other party for government formation in Delhi,’ a Congress leader said.

The party also demanded a ‘fair trial’ in the case of Delhi BJP unit vice-president Sher Singh Dagar, who was recorded offering Rs 4 crore to AAP MLA Dinesh Mohaniya on hidden camera.

‘The manner in which the sting operation has exposed the whole scandal has deeply hurt those who believe in democracy. We strictly condemn the incident and demand a fair probe into the case by an independent agency,’ Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely said in a statement.

City Congress chief spokesperson Mukesh Sharma demanded a lie detector test of Dagar and Mohaniya.

‘It is a very serious matter. We can’t just sit and watch things happening. An FIR should have been lodged till now against the BJP MLA,’ Sharma said.

Citing the sting row, Congress said delay in dissolving the Delhi Assembly will lead to such incidents.
‘The only way out from the current political situation in the city is fresh Assembly elections. The LG must dissolve the Assembly immediately to avert any further cases of horse-trading,’ Sharma said.

‘The party has long been demanding fresh Assembly elections in Delhi and immediately dissolution of the Assembly. The elections are the only option in Delhi, as no party had a clear majority to form a government, and it would not be possible for any party to form a government through defections of MLAs,’ said senior Congress leaders.
