Cong moots PM’s address to nation

Update: 2012-08-27 02:10 GMT
After the Parliament remaining paralysed for an entire week, there is a flicker of hope that it might function from Monday if the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) does not disrupt the house. However, the Congress is all set to take charge of the situation if the opposition does not come around.

According to highly placed sources in the Congress, the Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar would make one last attempt on Monday to break the logjam by calling the leaders of all the parties and requesting them to allow the house to function. The BJP has not allowed Parliament to function, demanding Prime minister Manmohan Singh's resignation over adverse findings in the CAG report on the allocation of coal blocks.

If the impasse in Parliament does not end even after the speaker's intervention, then, as indicated by finance minister P Chidambaram during his address to the media on Friday, the prime minister would directly address the nation on Monday. This will happen if Singh is not allowed to make a statement in the house. As a precursor to this, the finance minister P  Chidambaram addressed the media on the matter on Friday, forcing a strong rebuttal from the BJP leader Arun Jaitley the next day.

The prime minister heads for Tehran on Tuesday to attend the Non-Aligned Movement summit. Speaking to Millennium Post
, the newly appointed Congress spokesperson and Joint Parliamentary Committee chairperson P C Chacko said, 'Naturally the prime minister will address the nation if the opposition does not allow the house to function. Even the people of India want that this matter be brought to an end. I hope that good sense prevails in the BJP and they come for a discussion.'

Commenting on the deadlock coming to an end in Parliament, the Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit said, 'The opposition should heed to the request of the government and come for a debate in Parliament. We hope that they will do so soon.' Dikshit slammed the BJP, saying that their demand for the prime minister's resignation was ridiculous. 'The BJP is completely misrepresenting the CAG report,' he added.
