In a bid to avoid any confusion over election symbols in the ‘Torch’ and the ‘Broom’, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said that Election commission (EC) has made relevant changes in the symbol of the ‘Torch’. This Torch symbol had a beam that resembled the Broom symbol of AAP. Many independent candidates fought the last assembly election, held in December 2013, with this Torch symbol. This confusion, the party alleges, cost them two seats. The EC has now removed the beam from the Torch symbol to demarcate it from the Broom symbol for the forthcoming Lok Sabha election.
After the Delhi assembly election, AAP claimed that due to the confusion caused over election symbols in the ‘Torch’ and the ‘Broom’ at Janak Puri and Kalkaji booths, they lost the election for these two seats, which eventually stopped them from becoming the single largest party.
The winning margin in Janakpuri constituency where AAP candidate Rajesh Rishi got 40,242 votes, while winning candidate of BJP, Jadish Mukhi got 42,886 votes. At the same time Sanjay Puri, who had the ‘Torch’ symbol, got around 4332 votes and he secured fourth position.
The party said that there are 15 seats where ‘Torch’ was a symbol of the candidate and it was reported that several AAP supporters got confused between these two symbols, which resulted in a division of their votes.
Meanwhile, in Kalkaji seat the winning candidate of BJP, Harmeet Singh got 30,683 votes and Dharambir Singh of AAP got 28,639 votes. However, at the same time, Dharmender Kumar, an independent candidate with the ‘Torch’ symbol, got 3,092 votes and secured fourth position in the constituency.
