Interestingly, the number of cases registered under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in these years decreased even as quantity of various drugs recovered in 2013 rose in comparison to 2012.
According to the narcotics data maintained by the Delhi police, around 3,110 kg of ganja was recovered last year, whereas, 1,895.068 kg of ganja was recovered in 2012. An official in the Narcotics Department told Millennium Post that a variety of ganja is available in the market that can be differentiated according to the quality and price. The price varies from Rs 50 to Rs 700 per gram.
82.585 kgs of smack/heroin was recovered whereas 61.272 kgs was recovered in 2012. Similarly, 60.880 kg of opium was recovered in 2013 compared with around 49.500 kg in 2012. The quantity of cocaine recovered in 2013 simply doubled.
536 persons have been arrested in 2013 on the basis of 435 cases that were registered at various police stations on charges of drug trafficking. In 2013, around 825 cases were reported and 956 persons were arrested and were booked under NDPS Act. In 2011, however, 1,045 cases were registered and 1,198 persons were booked.
Crime Branch has not yet managed to collect data of arrests made in 2013 as per nationality, but 2012 data revealed out of 223 arrested foreigners, 121 were found to be Nigerians. Out of 121 Nigerians, 31 were booked for cheating, 26 under NDPS Act and remaining under different sections of IPC. However, the number of cases registered in 2013 was half if compared with criminal record in 2012. Despite the fact that less number of cases were registered in police stations, Delhi police managed to recover almost double the amount of drugs.
While the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) arrested 72 Nepalese for indulging in illegal narcotics dealing and trade, 67 Nigerians and 26 Myanmarese were apprehended under NDPS Act in 2012. Only two Ugandans and three South African nationals were apprehended for these offences during the same period across the country.
‘Other countries whose nationals were arrested during 2012 include Afghanistan (3), Sri Lanka (5), United Kingdom (2), Vietnam (1), United States of America (4), Indonesia (1) and Iran (1),’ NCB records revealed.
