CM gets to work, does away with red beacons

After paying homage to Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat, Kejriwal headed straight to his office in Delhi Secretariat and sat on the chief minister’s chair.

Kejriwal allotted portfolios among the ministers and allocated bureaucrats to the six cabinets ministers. Before attending the Cabinet meet, the chief minister went on to address the media gathering at the Secretariat’s auditorium.

In a bid to bring an end to city’s VIP culture, Kejriwal in the very first Cabinet meeting announced that the ministers, MLAs and bureaucrats will not get to use red beacons on their vehicles, which is seen as symbol of power and authority.

Kejriwal also held a meeting with principal secretary (power) RK Verma and Delhi Jal Board chief executive officer Debashree Mukherjee along with other senior officers on the issue of power and water subsidy. Since the meeting could not reach any logical conclusion, Kejriwal has called the meeting again on Monday to discuss the two vital issues.

The chief minister also met Delhi police commissioner BS Bassi. Kejriwal, however, did not provide information about his meeting with the top cop. But Bassi said that the two men ‘exchanged their vision for citizens’ security’.

The Delhi Cabinet headed by chief minister Arvind Kejriwal met on Saturday and also decided that the first session of the fifth Legislative Assembly of National Capital Territory of Delhi will be summoned from 1 January to 7 January 2014.

The Cabinet also decided that on 1st January oath/affirmation to the MLAs will be administered in the assembly.

The Cabinet considered the note of principal secretary law justice and legislative affairs and approved the proposal. However, it was decided that vote of confidence shall be obtained in the Legislative Assembly rather than Ramlila Maidan.  =Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung will address the House on 6 January at 11.

The Cabinet also decided in principle that no security would be provided to any officer or minister of the Delhi government as a matter of routine, unless there is a threat perception evaluated by the security agencies from time to time.

After Cabinet meeting, Kejriwal in an interaction with Delhi Secretariat’s bureaucrats said, ‘Bureaucrats have no reason to be scared. They should be scared only if they are corrupt.’
