Sheila Dikshit’s residence was in celebration mode on Sunday, as Delhi’s longest-serving Chief Minister celebrated her 75th birthday. Guests, flowers, birthday wishes, music, nothing was forgotten, but the main attraction of the party was a large cake weighing 75kgs!
And if that seems not cake enough for all the chief minister’s guests, there was more, with the birthday girl having to cut approximately 100 cakes that well-wishers got for her.
People from all walks of life, and across religions, gathered to extend their best wishes to Dikshit, and wish her a healthy and active public stint, long life and victory in the coming Assembly elections. They also expressed their confidence that Dikshit would continue to hold the post for a fourth term. And the Chief Minister met each and every one of them, graciously accepting the bouquets, best wishes and blessings that they bestowed on her.
Others came bearing sweets and fruits, and distributed them among the guests. Dikshit’s followers danced to the tunes of dhol and nagadas, and burst crackers to celebrate their favourite politician’s birthday.
Guests started coming in from early in the morning, and the numbers just kept increasing by the hour, till it seemed that the Chief Minister’s residence could hold no more.
Dikshit was also greeted by Assembly Speaker, Dr Yoganand Shastri, all her cabinet colleagues, MLAs and her Parliamentary secretaries, apart from the top bureaucrats.
Most of the MLAs came with a large number of their electorates in tow, whereas Mukesh Sharma led a mammoth contingent of the youth from his constituency and told the Chief Minister that the youth and women were her staunchest supporters, and have committed to bring her back to power in the elections. Sharma added that his party would astonish all political pundits by scoring the highest ever number of seats.
