Delhi winters are perfect for music festivals and you can well expect a full-house on these occasions, for if nothing else Delhiites love their music. But this weekend we were faced with a major dilemma - there was the ‘happiest music festival’ - the Bacardi NH7 Weekender and the true to the spirit of the country - the South Asian Band Festival . While one enjoyed the ambience of the Buddh International Circuit, the other nestled cosy in the Purana Qila greens.
The music lovers in Delhi split into a neat two as one group picked the NH7 Weekender, these were the people who had their cars or managed to figure out a car pool for let’s be honest, Buddh Circuit is far away. NH7 had the city talking for months. Everyone wanted to be there. They had an insane lineup with people like - And so I watch you from far, Baba Jas, benga, Bombay Bassment, Dhruv Vashisth, Dualist Inquiry Band, Faridkot, Frame/Frame, Hey Germino, Kate Miller - Heidke, Lucky Ali, Meshuggah, Moon Dogs, Noori, Nucleya, Prateek Kuhad collective, Rajasthan Roots, Sampology, Scribe, Shiva Soundsystem, Soundclash, Swaggamuffin, Tarqueeb, The Grind, Vir Das’ Alien Chutney, Dry the River, Dubtron, FuzzCulture, J.Viewz, Kailasa, Karsh Kale collective+The NH7 All-Stars, Kill Paris, Michale Menert, Moinker, Sandunes, Swarathma, The heatwave, The Lightyears Explode, The Ska vengers, TOT, We Were Promised Jetpacks, YT, Zervas and Pepper and Ziggy the Blunt. Phew!
On the other hand, the South Asian Band Festival, the seventh edition of a three-day affair, had the Barefaced Liar, LRB, ZnG, Biuret, Stigmata, Papon and the East India, Strings, What’s In The Name, Pardis, Susmit Sen Chronicles, Albatross and The Raghu Dixit Project. All well-known names in their own right from across countries. Without a doubt, Papon, Strings, Susmit Sen and Raghu Dixit were the highlights. The festival was presented by Ministry of External Affairs, Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and Seher. While we loved the sheer colour and the energy that comes with NH7, we have to admit that we were blown away by the South Asian Band Festival. With a free entry and incredible atmosphere with a to-die-for venue, the latter did take away a lot of attention from the NH7 guys. But then each to his own and lucky us for we got to do both and we can’t wait for next year!
