Civic bodies move closer towards goal of planned progress

Update: 2013-07-25 23:47 GMT
With a view to ensure planned development in the city, the town planning department of the three municipal corporations have almost finalised the Local Area Plan (LAP) for 36 wards which will soon be sent to the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) for its approval. The DDA under the Master Plan-21 had ordered the erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to prepare LAP for each of the 272 municipal wards in the city to curb unplanned development.

'In Delhi, huge expanses under each municipal ward consists of unplanned and unauthorised development and it is difficult providing civic amenities in such areas, once unplanned development has taken place. These LAPs will ensure space for civic amenities in advance and hence planned development in the city,' said a senior officer of the town planning department in South Delhi Municipal Corporation, which is the nodal office for this project for all three municipal corporations.
In 2010-11, the MCD had approved the drawing up of the LAP for 33 wards on a pilot project basis.

The corporation has also engaged five institutes, School of Planning and Architecture, Guru Govind Singh Indraprastha University, Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), Association of Municipalities and Development Authority (AMDA) and Jamia Millia Islamia for the work.

'The institutes have submitted the draft plan for the wards in the city. These plans have been considered by the monitoring committee and after incorporation of modifications and corrections they will be referred to the DDA for the final approval,' added the officer.
The status of work will be presented before the standing committee of East Delhi Municipal Corporation on Thursday.

'LAP will ensure better planning to provide civic amenities in these wards. We have sanctioned the formation of LAP for all 66 wards in our area. Work on rest of the plan will be started after getting approval of DDA for these LAPs,' said Sanjay Surjan, chairman of standing committee in East DMC. The wards whose draft LAP has been prepared are- Khichirpur, Kondali, Gharoli, Vivek Vihar, Dilshad Colony, and Dilshad Garden.
