Civic bodies, LG rush to renew testing of mid day meal samples

Update: 2013-03-06 01:08 GMT
After Millennium Post exposed on Monday that the regular examination of mid day meal samples were not being examined, officers of the municipal corporations have gone into a tizzy to renew the contract with the laboratory. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Tejender Khanna has taken a serious note of the issue and directed the concerned authorities to take immediate action.

'I called up the municipal commissioner of South MCD and he told me that the contract for testing of samples have been renewed recently,' said Ranjan Mukherjee, OSD to LG. 'I will also check the matter with other senior officers responsible for the project,' he added.

Millennium Post on Monday had exposed the fact that regular testing of mid day meal samples had been stopped in Delhi since 31 October, as the NGOs refused to pay for the charges.

'The contract has been renewed with immediate effect till May 2013,' said Manih Gupta, Commissioner of South Delhi Municipal Corporation. 'We have engaged two laboratories for four zones in our area,' added Gupta. The senior officers of the education department revealed that the contract was renewed on Monday.

'The contract for testing of mid day meal samples was signed on Monday,' said Jaspal Keim, Assistant Director of Education, North Delhi Municipal Corporation (North DMC).

East DMC Commissioner S S Yadav had already renewed the contract on Saturday when Millennium Post had contacted him for his comments on the issue.

However, the Directorate of Education is yet to renew the contract. 'We have sent our file for renewal to senior officers. It would be renewed in a day or two,' said a senior officer on condition of anonymity.

As per the provision, around 100 samples of mid day meal, 46 from municipal corporations and over 50 from Delhi government schools, are sent for chemical testing of quality of the food.

The price is paid by the NGOs engaged for providing mid day meal to primary and upper primary schools in Delhi. But, NGOs, in connivance with the officers, stopped the process to save the Rs 5,000 spent per sample.
