City-wide raid conducted over illegal sale of LPG cylinders

The Department of Food Supplies and Consumer Affairs, along with officials from Department of Weights and Measures has taken up a massive drive against misuse of domestic LPG cylinders for commercial purposes, sale of spurious LPG equipment and illegal transfer of LPG from big cylinders to small cylinders.

Nine teams constituted by the department have conducted extensive raids across the city in 210 premises.

According to sources, during the massive drive, 11 criminal cases in various police stations were registered against the violators. A maximum of seven cases were registered in west district, two in north west district and one each in south and south west district, under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 and various other sections of Indian Penal Code.

The major violators included restaurants and sweet shops. LPG godowns have also been inspected to ensure that the LPG cylinders being supplied to the consumers are of appropriate weight.

‘The raids shall be continued and the department will take strict action including registration of criminal cases against the violators,’ Food Supplies and Consumer Affairs officer said.
