SALWAN CROSS COUNTRY MARATHON TO BE HELD ON 4 NOVEMBER
The 18th edition of the Salwan Cross Country Marathon will be flagged off on 4 November. The race, being supported by Unicef and FICCI, will be held at Nicholson Range, Brar Square in the Delhi cantonment area. The Salwan Marathon is the largest race for school students in the world, as recognised by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). The event which saw merely 300 students participating when it first started in 1995, had more than 47,000 participants last year. Around 1,500 visually impaired and intellectually challenged students will run the special 4.5 km run which Unicef and FICCI are supporting.

It was a cool morning in the capital on Tuesday with the minimum temperature settling a notch below average at 19.5 degrees Celsius. The weather office has forecast a partly cloudy day ahead. ‘The day will be partly cloudy with thunder developments expected in some areas. The maximum temperature will be around 35 degrees Celsius,’ an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said. Maximum humidity at 8.30 am was 68 per cent. Monday was a notch above average at 34.7 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature was average for this time of the season at 20 degrees Celsius.
CIVIC BODY ON CLEAN CITY DRIVE
The standing committee chairman of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) started month long special sanitation drive of the corporation on Tuesday morning from Mansaram Colony in Najafgarh Zone. ‘The month long drive is aimed to provide clean environment to residents and shopper in the market places. The big market areas of the corporation and shopping complexes would be cleaned at night with deployment of additional sanitation workers. We have resolved zero tolerance policy against garbage collection on road side and residential areas,’ said Rajesh Gehlot, Chariman of the Standing Committee in SDMC. The special sanitation drive will conclude on 22 November 2012. Chairman also organised a public hearing on the spot and directed the officers to resolve the problems of the citizens. Gehlot also announced cash prize and certificates for sanitation workers through a competition based on their performance. ‘The performance would be awarded and bad ones must be punished,’ added Gehlot.
