Bracing for first leadership change in a decade in the backdrop of political scandal involving senior leader Bo Xilai, China’s ruling communist party today said the process to elect delegates for its key Congress has been completed.

A total of 2,270 delegates have been elected to attend the upcoming 18th National Congress of the Party, an official statement said.

The delegates, who would represent more than 82 million party members, will attend the Congress, which is scheduled to be held in second half of this year in Beijing, it said. It is widely expected to be held in November this year.

The Congress selects new General Secretary who will also become President of the country and will replace incumbent Hu Jintao and other top leaders.

As per the constitution of the party, leaders would hold party posts for two five year terms and retire after that.

Hu and Prime Minister Wen Jiabao are set to retire to pave way for new set of leaders.

Barring for any last minute trouble, the succession of leadership at various levels has already been settled, according to party insiders.

As per the indications Vice President, Xi Jinping is expected to succeed Hu while Vice Premier, Li Keqiang would take over reigns from Wen.

Monday’s announcement said Hu and other eight members of the powerful Standing Committee of the Politburo of Party’s Central Committee were all included in the list of names of the delegates.

The nine member Politburo headed by General Secretary is the most powerful body, which rules China under the system of collective leadership.
