Charge of favouring Vadra leaves Congress red in face

Update: 2013-03-15 00:13 GMT
Delhi Chief Minister and Delhi Jal Boar Chairperson were left red in the face on Thursday, when BJP MLA from the Palam Assembly constituency, Dharam Deo Solanki, during the question hour alleged that water is being siphoned off to Robert Vadra’s under-construction five star hotels, while people of Palam Assembly constituency are deprived of drinking water.

Sat Prakash Rana, BJP MLA from Bijwasan added, ‘It’s been 15 years since this government took over but the problem of water scarcity in my area is still acute. Instead of supplying water to Bijwasan and Palam areas, it has been diverted to construction of hotels by GMR.’ GMR is constructing a hospitality district near the airport, which includes 16 big hotels, besides a commercial complex and a convention centre spread across 43 acres.

In spite of the best efforts of the Congress MLAs to change the subject, Rana added that the government was not keen on understanding the plight of areas like Bijwasan, Palam and Mehrauli, as the problem of water scarcity in Congress stituencies have been taken care of.

‘People of ares like Bijwasan and Palam get drinking water only once a week,’ he alleged.

Six of the 10 BJP MLAs in the Assembly continued to harp on the issue of water scarcity. Rana and Solanki also  demanded the constitution of a committee to investigate if water is being diverted to the construction sites. But  Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit retorted that such a committee already existed, as part of the Delhi Jal Board and the MLAs were free to take up the matter with it.
