The Centre’s ambitious plans to build toilets in rural areas has hit a roadblock with several states complaining about lack of proper convergence between different government departments.
The programme was initiated by Jairam Ramesh when he was minister in-charge of sanitation.
With an aim to making India open defecation free in 10 years, the rural development ministry headed by Ramesh and drinking water and sanitation ministry had reached an understanding to converge Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (NBA) with MNREGA to increase money for construction of toilets in rural areas. The goal of NBA is to achieve 100 per cent access to sanitation for all rural households by 2022.
‘Reports from evaluation studies conducted by the ministry of drinking water and sanitation and feedback from many states show that implementation of NBA in convergence with MNREGA has not
perhaps been streamlined fully by the state governments,’ new sanitation minister Bharatsinh Solanki said on Friday.
