A sub-inspector of Ghaziabad Police lost his job for an unusual reason: he was caught stealing a mobile phone from an optical shop in the city. It was not too difficult for the police to nail him, as the close-circuit TV (CCTV) cameras caught him in the act. 'He has been suspended and a departmental inquiry has been ordered in to the matter,' said Prashant Kumar, a senior superintendent of police, Ghaziabad.
The incident happened around on Friday evening when Sub-Inspector Atar Singh who is in-charge of Sector 9 police post in the Kavi Nagar police station area of Ghaziabad visited the optical shop to get his spectacles repaired. The sub-inspector picked up the optician's mobile phone and put it in his pocket as the optician left the counter to repair the glasses. Surprisingly, he was in the full police uniform at the time of incident. When the optician Chhotu returned, he asked Singh about the mobile phone which he had left at the counter, but Singh feigned ignorance.
Chhotu asked Singh to register a complaint about the missing mobile, but he was turned away. Chhotu's boss then tried to identify the culprit with the help of CCTV footage and found Singh stealing the phone. They again approached the police, but again they were turned away. Then Chhotu's boss leaked the footage to media.
He made a CD of the footage and lodged a complaint with the Ghaziabad Police chief Prashant Kumar, who suspended Singh.
