At the National Education Day celebrated by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Tuesday in New Delhi, the importance of community outreach programmes were brought to the fore.

The National Education Day is celebrated every year on 11 November. The Ministry of Human Resource Development has declared 11 November as National Education Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. To celebrate this day CBSE introduced themes for schools every year. This year the theme for the day is ‘Joy of Giving’.

Rajshri Bhattacharya, secretary, School Education and Literacy, was touched by CBSE’s effort to sensitise people towards community service and said, ‘Recognition of community service and community outreach does not occur frequently at school level. It is heart warming to see CBSE make such a gesture.’

Vineet Joshi, chairman, CBSE, expressed his amazement at the projects carried out by schools and said, ‘There can be no other joy greater than the joy of giving. I congratulate the schools for having made such an enormous effort in such a short time.’

CBSE has more than 12,000 schools across India under its umbrella. A lot of them are yet to start community outreach.

More than 200 schools had sent applications to be adjudged the best in its community reach efforts. Out of which 14 from Ajmer, Allahabad, Panchkula, Chennai, Guwahati, Delhi, Patna and Bhubaneshwar were selected to be part of the final event. Two teams (a student and a teacher in each team) have been selected from each CBSE region on the basis of the details filled in the questionnaire and the digital evidences.

The teams were awarded for their contribution to the society, with certificates to the participants and cash awards to the school to motivate them to continue with the exemplary work. The winners were PEM School (Chennai), Rachana School (Ajmer) and Birla High School (Kolkata).
