The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday said that it has registered five cases against an executive engineer and five junior engineers of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) ‘for conspiring with a private firm to fraudulently cheat the government’ by supplying spurious parts of motor pumps, gear boxes, machinery and spare parts used in sewage treatment plants.

A Central Bureau of Investigation spokesperson said that the agency had conducted searches at 21 places in Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad. The agency has booked 13 employees of Delhi’s water supply agency in the case.

The Delhi Jal Board officials allegeldy conspired with a private firm to cheat the government to the tune of Rs 6 crore by supplying spurious and cheap parts of motors pumps, gear boxes machinery and spare parts used in sewage treatment plants at exorbitant rates by showing the firm as authorised dealer of a manufacturing company.

The raids by the CBI are significant because the newly-elected chief minister Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party government had transferred as many as 800 water supply officials on suspicion of alleged corruption in the board.

On 6 January, Delhi the chief minister had suspended three Delhi Jal Board executives after a sting operation by a television channel allegedly showed them accepting bribes.

The Aam Aadmi Party government has also said it will break the nexus between Delhi Jal Board officials and private suppliers of water tankers in the city.
