The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday detected large-scale alleged irregularities in the issuance of birth certificates by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (North MCD) during a surprise check. The agency will soon begin an inquiry into the matter.
The agency had received information that officers of the civic body were allegedly working in connivance of touts for issuing birth certificates and minting money in the process, sources said. It was alleged that several birth certificates were being issued by using unique SDM order number of any genuine applicant. It was further alleged that multiple birth certificates were being issued on the basis of hospital records of a genuine applicant, they said.
After getting the information, a team of CBI officers carried out surprise checks at the office of Registrar Births and Deaths of North MCD at Rajpur Road, office of SDM Model Town and headquarters of North MCD at the Civic Centre.
Sources said, during surprise check, several instances were found that substantiated the allegations. “The CBI have collected several incriminating documents and is examining the matter,” a CBI official said, adding that <g data-gr-id="21">agency</g> will soon start an inquiry into it.
Officials of the North MCD confirmed the <g data-gr-id="20">raid,</g> but refused to divulge details. “As the CBI has conducted raids, they will brief about it. Our duty is to co-operate with them only, which we did accordingly.” said a senior official of the North MCD.
